Ultra-processed foods are now a dominant part of diets worldwide and are strongly linked with rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, and numerous other chronic conditions. A landmark 2024 umbrella review of nearly 10 million people published in leading medical journals identified 32 distinct adverse health outcomes associated with higher ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption, with no single study reporting a beneficial health outcome.
