With the next administration taking office this month, the conversation about public health is again front and center. While healthcare policies have sometimes been a source of political division, there’s a simple truth we can all agree on: preventing disease is better than treating it because it saves lives and money.
As the global burden of cancer continues to rise, it has become increasingly urgent for healthcare systems worldwide to adapt and respond to this pressing public health challenge. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that the burden of cancer is substantial, with over 19 million new cases diagnosed worldwide in 2020, and this number is projected to reach 28.4 million by 2040.
Every year, cervical cancer continues to impact hundreds of thousands of women, families, and communities, even though we have all the tools we need to prevent it and even eliminate it completely. Access to vaccines, screening and treatment continues to be scarce in the places that need them most. Vaccines prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, in turn preventing cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers.
Convenient Cancer Prevention Screening tests help detect cancer in it early, most treatable stages, even before you have symptoms. Some, such as a screening colonoscopy, can even treat cancer by removing abnormal cells before they become a problem. Colonoscopy has to be done in a doctor's office. But other screening tests don't.
